About Hippo Creek Safaris
“…just sit back, read about your destinations, get excited, learn about your camera, and let us, the safari experts, take care of every detail!”

Nina Wennersten
Co-Owner
Nina’s first safari was in 1976 when she fell in love with Africa. By the mid 1980s, Nina had begun to lead groups to Africa several times a year. During this time, Nina observed companies spending pre-safari days in city hotels, as well as visiting sights that few guests actually enjoyed. Nina’s philosophy was to take full advantage of the spent time in Africa, maximizing every hour there. Her attention to detail and desire to provide the guest with the ultimate experience led Nina to design bespoke itineraries, and these ideas blossomed into Hippo Creek Safaris. With over thirty years of traveling to Africa and more than 100 trips taken so far, Nina knows that safari only gets better and better. Nina has been selected as one of the Top Specialists for East Africa by Condé Nast Traveler magazine since 2001.

Dan grew up “on safari”. As Nina’s son, Africa was always part of the conservation at home. By the late 1990s, Dan headed off on safari as well, with his love of Africa very evident from the start. Dan would often discover and explore new travel destinations, bringing a fresh perspective back each time. Photography was a passion of Dan’s from a young age, spending hours at a time in his own darkroom printing his work, long before the digital era took hold. With the magic of Africa in front of his lens, this affinity grew immeasurably; he was able to share this with Hippo Creek’s guests. Joining the company full-time in 2004, Dan’s experience and enthusiasm have been catalysts in Hippo Creek Safaris’ growth into the company it is today. Dan’s incredibly detailed knowledge of the camps, lodges, villas and private homes allows him to utilize the fine details and specialties he’s learned firsthand about each property. This level of expertise enables him to craft the ultimate customized itinerary, ensuring each trip he designs evokes the magic that only a safari in Africa can provide. Dan has been selected as one of the Top Specialists for East Africa by Condé Nast Traveler magazine since 2008.
